Mount Makay Massif

Mount Makay Massif is located in the central-west of Madagascar covering Atsimo-Andrefana and Menabe regions, near Beroroha and Malaimbandy. It covers an area approximately 4,000 km² -150 kms long and 40–50 kms wide.

The Mountain elevates up to 1,034 m with the highest point known as Dafimavo with the major rivers i.e Sakeny → Tsiribihina, Makay → Mangoky, Maharivo → Mozambique Channel. 

The Mountain’s rock type is of the Jurassic-era sandstone (Isalo/Makay Formation) which is light-colored with cross-bedded sandstones and mudstones. 

It also comprises of Deep canyons and ravines carved over millions of years create a “ruiniform” labyrinth—massif often described as a cerebellumlike labyrinth. The terrain includes; a mixture of plateau surfaces, steep cuestas, narrow ridges, hidden pools, cascades and forest galleries in gorge bottoms. 

Biodiversity

The Flora you watch around the mountain are sparse xeric vegetation—Didiereaceae, Euphorbiaceae, shrubs, grasses. There are also Gorge forests i.e Lush patches containing bamboo, pandanas, Ravenea palms (including rare R. rivularis), ferns, mosses. 

Fauna species you watch include; 10 species of lemurs i.e Verreaux’s sifaka, red-fronted lemur, Coquerel’s giant mouse lemur, gray mouse lemur, fat-tailed dwarf lemur, etc. carnivores, reptiles and amphibians like Scorpions (Grosphus makay), frogs, snakes like Langaha, leaftailed geckos can be watched. There are also 112 bird species (40% of Madagascar’s total), including raptors, ibis.
