Mount Andringitra

Mount Andringitra is a striking granite mountain located in the southeastern highlands of Madagascar, within the Andringitra National Park. Though it is often overshadowed by Mount Boby (Pic Boby / Imarivolanitra)—the highest peak in the range—Mount Andringitra lends its name to the entire Andringitra Massif, one of Madagascar’s most dramatic and ecologically rich landscapes.

Famous for its breathtaking scenery, alpine biodiversity, and unique microclimates, Mount Andringitra is a key part of Madagascar’s natural heritage and a hotspot for trekking, climbing, and scientific research.

Geology and Landscape

The Andringitra Massif, including Mount Andringitra itself, is formed from ancient Precambrian crystalline rock, primarily granite and gneiss. Over millions of years, erosion and tectonic forces have shaped the area into:

Glacially carved valleys

Highland waterfalls

Mount Andringitra lies at the core of one of Madagascar’s most ecologically diverse areas, exhibiting a remarkable altitudinal gradient from lowland rainforest to alpine grassland.

The Mountain has various flora and fauna species which include; over 1,000 species of plants recorded in the massif in varying vegetation zones which include; Humid evergreen forests (800–1,800 m), Montane cloud forests, Alpine meadows and heathlands (above 2,000 m), Endemic and rare species i.e the High-altitude orchids, Pachypodium succulent plants, Tree ferns, giant lobelias and cushion plants.

The fauna you watch include many endemic and endangered species i.e Ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), Red-fronted brown lemur, Eastern lesser bamboo lemur. There are also bird species i.e more than 100 which include; Yellow-bellied sunbird-asity, Madagascar kestrel, Pollen’s vanga, Reptiles and amphibians, Chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos and endemic frogs. 

Climate around the Mountain 

Mount Andringitra consists of the coldest temperatures with temperature ranging from 2°C to 25°C (28°F to 77°F). It also has frost and ice above 2,400 m with rainfall that varies by slope; eastern slopes are wetter due to trade winds.

Trekking and Climbing

Mount Andringitra and the surrounding park offer some of Madagascar’s best hiking and adventure opportunities. Trekking takes place along various routes which include; Namoly Valley to Pic Boby summit (2 to 3 Days) and traverse the rainforest, grasslands and granite terrain. 

Diavolana Plateau Circuit (“Moonlight Plateau”) which was named for its bare granite appearance and Ideal for nature walks, photography and rock scrambling. Tsaranoro Valley Trek offers you access from the west (near Ambalavao) featuring beautiful cliffs and easier paths for casual trekkers. The attractions include; Mount Andringitra’s summit plateau with panoramic views, Riambavy and Riandahy Waterfalls, sacred twin falls in the eastern valleys.
