Lake Tritriva
Lake Tritriva is a deep, crater lake located in the central highlands of Madagascar close to the town of Antsirabe. The volcanic lake is popular for its beautiful blue-green waters, steep rock cliffs, and deep cultural significance. The lake is enfolded by legends, geological wonders, and unique flora. Lake Tritriva is located on Mount Tritriva, a dormant volcanic cone. The lake fills the summit crater, surrounded by steep basaltic cliffs, creating a dramatic terrain landscape that contrasts with the green plateaus beneath.

Geological Background
Lake Tritriva was formed within a volcanic crater, part of the Cenozoic volcanic field that shaped much of Madagascar’s central highlands. Its depth and almost vertical cliffs indicate that it was formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption (an explosion caused by magma contacting groundwater).
Unique geological features
Basalt and trachyte formations around the rim
Evidence of volcanic subsidence and faulting
No visible surface inflow or outflow, yet the lake maintains a stable level — likely due to underground hydrological connections
One of Lake Tritriva’s most mysterious aspects is its hydrological behavior:
During the dry season, the lake’s water level rises.
During the rainy season, the water level drops.
This inverse hydrology is believed to result from underground water channels and pressure changes in the porous volcanic rock — a phenomenon that continues to intrigue geologists.
Although relatively small, the lake and its surroundings support a limited but specialized range of flora and fauna:
Flora
Sparse pine trees and eucalyptus introduced during colonial times
Native highland shrubs and grasses
Endemic plant species in nearby areas
Fauna
Limited aquatic life due to the lake’s depth, low nutrient content, and isolation
Bird species common to the highland forests
Few fish, possibly due to the lack of connectivity to other water bodies
Because of the steep cliffs and high altitude, Lake Tritriva’s ecosystem is relatively undisturbed compared to lowland lakes.
Lake Tritriva is not only a geological wonder but also a sacred site in Malagasy tradition.
Visitors are expected to respect the tranquility of the lake.
Some locals still perform rituals or offerings at the water’s edge.
