Lake Mantasoa
Lake Mantasoa is an artificial lake located in Madagascar’s central highlands. Originally created in the 1930s to supply water and regulate river flow, the lake has evolved into a popular destination for tourism, water sports, and weekend getaways.
Surrounded by pine forests and rolling hills, it combines natural beauty with historical legacy, especially tied to the 19th-century industrialist Jean Laborde, who established Madagascar’s first modern manufacturing complex near the site.

It was Madagascar’s first large-scale industrial center and symbolized early modernization efforts.
Today, the ruins of the Laborde Foundry and Workshops remain an important cultural heritage site, with some restored for tourism and educational purposes.
Creation of the Lake
A dam was constructed to regulate the Ikopa River and supply water for agriculture, hydropower, and urban needs downstream.
The resulting Lake Mantasoa submerged much of the valley, creating a vast reservoir surrounded by forested highlands.

Though man-made, Lake Mantasoa has developed into a rich ecosystem over the decades, supporting a range of flora and fauna.

3. Water Resource Management
The lake is still used to regulate water flow into the Ikopa River, a key waterway that supplies hydropower and irrigation systems for the capital city, Antananarivo.
