Lake Itasy
Lake Itasy is Madagascar’s third-largest lake situated in the central highlands of the island. The Lake consists of volcanic origins, rich biodiversity and cultural importance. Around the lake are rolling hills, fertile farmland and geothermal features. Lake Itasy lies in a tectonic and volcanic zone part of the Itasy Volcanic Field, and is surrounded by lava domes, basalt plateaus, and hot springs.

Geological Features
Lake Itasy was formed by volcanic activity and includes features like;
- Basaltic lava flows
- Volcanic cones
- Fumaroles and geysers
- Thermal springs, such as those in Analavory and Ampefy
The lake is fed by small rivers and springs, and it drains into the Sakay River, which ultimately flows into the Tsiribihina River and reaches the western coast. Its water level and surface area fluctuate seasonally and are influenced by rainfall and human activities.

Flora around the lake are aquatic plants like papyrus and floating vegetation. There are also grasslands and shrubs around the lake. Some are endemic in the nearby forests and wetlands.

There are also various bird species which include; the Madagascar Grebe (Tachybaptus pelzelnii), Humblot’s Heron (Ardea humbloti), Madagascar Pond Heron (Ardeola idae), Many migratory waterbirds.
There is also Fish like the Paratilapia polleni as well as Tilapia which has been introduced and is now dominant. There are also amphibians and reptiles like frogs and chameleons found in surrounding habitats.
Despite its ecological richness, Lake Itasy has not received the same conservation status as Lake Alaotra, making it more vulnerable to degradation.
