Isalo National Park
Isalo National Park is situated in the South western part of Madagascar with various safari attractions which include the stunning sandstone canyons, rugged plateaus, hidden oases and rich biodiversity.
Isalo National Park covers an area of 815 km²of of Jurassic-era sandstone, deep gorges, craggy pinnacles and awe-inspiring “uniform” formations, Canyon des Makis (Monkey Canyon), Canyon des Rats. The park includes diverse flora and fauna species which include more than 500 plant species i.e elephant-foot pachypodiums, endemic aloes (Aloe isaloensis), euphorbias, palms and shady riparian vegetation.
There are also animal species i.e 14 lemur species like the ring‑tailed lemur, Verreaux’s sifaka, red-fronted brown lemur. There are also bird species in the park i.e 80 species which are endemic Benson’s rock thrush. There are also reptiles and amphibians i.e 47 reptile and 24 amphibians like the rainbow frog and white‑lipped bright‑eyed frog.
Activities to do in the Park
Hiking
Hiking is the main adventure with various routes that vary rom the easy ones taking periods of 1 to 2 hours. The walks include; multi‑day treks, all guided by experienced local guides.
The hiking adventure includes; famous trails like Piscine Naturelle (Natural Pool) which is steep offering you views of the turquoise pools, Cascade des Nymphes with serene waterfall oasis, Black & Blue Pools with different steep trails that are beautiful and awesome for swimming. You shall also briefly stop at the Window of Isalo where you view the sunset.
Trek across massif
While in Madagascar, you shall embark on trek traversing the massif combing Plateau, pools, waterfalls.
Best Time to Visit
Isalo National Park can be visited anytime around the park although the best time to visit the park is during the dry season in the months of April to October. During this time, the hiking conditions are cooler with minimal rain. The peak months are July, August and December.
The Wet season takes place in the months of November and March with more rainfall making trails muddy, slippery and challenging to navigate.
How to Get There
Isalo National Park can be accessed by use of road as the park is situated along RN7, ~240 km from Toliara (Tuléar) and ~280 km from Fianarantsoa; best accessed via Ranohira village.
