Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park & Reserve is a renowned marine protected area located off the southern coast of Kenya, near Shimoni in Kwale County. Spanning 39 km²—28 km² designated as the marine park and 11 km² as the adjacent reserve—it is celebrated for its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and historical significance.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

The park boasts some of Kenya’s best snorkeling and diving spots, featuring over 250 fish species, including angelfish, triggerfish, and the endangered Napoleon wrasse. Diving depths range from 2 to 32 meters, accommodating both beginners and experienced divers.

Dolphin Watching

Kisite-Mpunguti is renowned as the “Home of the Dolphins,” with frequent sightings of spinner and bottlenose dolphins, especially in the mornings.

Bird Watching

Kisite Island is recognized as an Important Bird Area, supporting breeding colonies of roseate and sooty terns from July to September.

Getting There

By Road: Approximately 574 km from Nairobi and 90 km from Mombasa. The park is 11 km offshore from Shimoni.

By Air: Fly to Moi International Airport (Mombasa) or Ukunda Airstrip, then proceed by road to Shimoni.

By Rail: Travel via the Standard Gauge Railway to Miritini (Mombasa), then connect by road to Shimoni.

Access to the park is exclusively by boat. Visitors can arrange trips through local tour operators or the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) office near Shimoni Pier.

Best Time to Visit

December to March: Optimal for snorkeling, diving, and dolphin watching due to calm seas and clear waters.

July to September: Ideal for spotting humpback whales during their migration.
