Katonga Wildlife Reserve is a protected area located in western Uganda, in the districts of Kamwenge, Ibanda, and Kyegegwa. It is situated in the Rift Valley and is part of the larger Katonga Wildlife Reserve system. The reserve is known for its wetland ecosystems and diverse wildlife, recommended to self drive travelers that are transiting to Kibale forest National Park which is the home for the Primates in Uganda!
It was named after the Katonga river, the reserve was established in 1998 with a total coverage area of 211 square kilometers. It is known for hosting various species of wildlife, including Uganda kob, waterbuck, topi, and buffalo. The wetlands in the reserve are also important for birdlife, with numerous species of waterbirds found in the area.

When to go?

How to access Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Katonga reserve is located in the western part of Uganda within the districts of Kyenjojo and Kamwenge. From Kampala, the drive to the reserve takes about 3 to 4 hours. Alternative route is the Lake Mburo Rushere -Ibanda Road
